LASI is the CAD tool used to design the ECE 344 mask set. It's a solid, mature platform capable of much more ambitious tasks. Devices designed using LASI have been successfully fabbed through the The MOSIS VLSI Fabrication Service. Even SPICE nodelist creation and design rule checking have been incorporated into LASI. For the price, it can't be beat!
This is Version 5.1.0 of the LASI CAD System that has been released expressly for Internet/SimTel by Dave Boyce the author. This version contains a new memory manager, numerous fixes and improvements and a new program that improves SPICE analysis of IC layouts. LASI was developed to do integrated circuit and device layout on almost any IBM compatible personal computer. It may be used for other CAD applications such as schematics or printed circuit boards. Drawings may be translated between GDSII or CIF, and from AutoCAD. Drawings can be accutately plotted on laser, dot matrix printers or HP-GL plotters. It is a CAD system that is easy to learn and run, and is primarily intended for educational use in schools and colleges by students, researchers, or anyone who doesn't have time or funding for more elaborate CAD systems. The files are condensed in two zipped files LASI510A.ZIP and LASI510B.ZIP. You must unzip both of these files in a subdirectory named \LASI5 to have a complete LASI system.
You can find the zip files in the lasi5 directory of our web site. Note, you might have to hold the SHIFT key down in order to download through your web browser.
Unzip them in a directory called C:\LASI5.
The current ECE 344 mask set drawings are similarly available(although some browsers may need to have the SHIFT key held down or "download to disk" selected in order to download a file). Put them into a directory called C:\LASI5\1994mask. If you use another directory or drive, edit the form.dbd file to agree with your location before starting LASI from that directory (The path to LASI.EXE must be in your path, of course).
The 1991 version of the mask set was the subject of Kevin Tsurutome's Master's thesis. Some of his documents on the mask set are available.
A short TUTORIAL to help students take measurements from the CAD drawings of the mask set has been prepared.
LASI and the ECE 344 mask set are also available to run or copy at the CCSO PC sites at UIUC. (See the "ECE 344" entry under the "Class Software" menu.)
Some people may find a speed advantage by getting the CAD program from one of the many sites around the world which serve the SimTel collection by anonymous ftp. LASI will usually be found in a directory such as SimTel/msdos/cad at such sites.
