X-SESSIONS FROM GENERIC X-TERMINALS

  1. Start X windows if it's not already running. The standard command is x11start or xinit. The EWS machines always run X so you don't need to start it there.
  2. Type xhost machine_name (where machine_name is irvin.ece, vdpauw.ece, trumbore.ece, lawrence.ece, or warner.ece) to allow the 344 lab's machine to put xterms on the local monitor.
  3. Telnet to a machine which is neither running ICCAP nor has anyone at the console (if possible) by typing:
         telnet machine_name
    where machine_name is irvin.ece, vdpauw.ece, trumbore.ece, lawrence.ece, or warner.ece.
  4. Login as usual. Respond to the (vt100?) prompt by typing xterm.
  5. Then type the command:
         setenv DISPLAY local_machine_name:0.0
Where local_machine_name is the internet address of the machine you are sitting at. For example, eesn42.ews.uiuc.edu is a machine in the EWS lab. Like most unix commands, this is case sensitive. Be sure DISPLAY is in caps!
  6. Start an extra xterm window to the ECE 344 machine by typing xterm -sb &. The setenv statement will make the window appear on your local machine. Repeat ther previous step in this new window.
  7. Start ICCAP from either of the 344 machine windows, by typing iccap.
  8. Do not get upset at slow response time, this method is very network intensive. Don't forget to save often in case something goes wrong and you lose everything that wasn't saved to disk!
  9. When finished with IC-CAP, use the exit menu item to quit the program. Then, simply type exit in each remaining window to the ece344 machine.
