ECE344: Chemical Spill

In case of emergency, always call 911 and give the following information :

Specific information about the emergency
Chemical Spill
Determine type of spill (acid, base, solvent)
- If greater than 1 liter is spilled
911 and explain the situation
If less than 1 liter is spilled
- usher students out of wetlab
- designate one student to call lab director (3-8249)
- put on faceshield, nitrile gloves, apron, and follow following instructions
Acid Spill
open acid spill cleanup kit
follow directions on inside cover
Base Spill
open base spill cleanup kit
follow directions on inside cover
Solvent Spill
open solvent spill cleanup kit
follow directions on inside cover
be especially careful if broken glass is present, it can puncture the gloves
Chemical contact with student
Small area contact (e.g. hand, foot, wrist)
call 911, explain situation, ask for ambulance to Everitt Laboratory, 1406 W. Green St., Rm. 50Q cleanrooms
rinse affected area for at least 15 minutes or until paramedics arrive
contact lab director (3-8249)
If conscious
call 911, explain situation, ask for ambulance to Everitt Laboratory, 1406 W. Green St., Rm. 50Q cleanrooms

keep the student calm
Large contact area (e.g. torso, leg, whole arm)

follow 911 operators instructions
designate a student to contact lab director (rm 46 EL) - do not have them de-gown
If conscious

have student rinse under shower for at least 15 minutes with clothes removed
